The first major hard coal mines in Upper Silesia were established in the second half of the 18th century. With the development of industry, the first larger mining plants began to emerge. An example is the "Brandenburg" mine in Ruda Śląska, officially opened in 1769, although mentions of mining in this area date back to 1751.
